Aberthin Annual Duck Race

Huw, our ‘ace’ reporter and finishing line official, was on hand to ensure that there was no ‘fowl’ play or fiddling with his ‘electronic’ scoreboard.

This year’s Duck Race was held on Sunday 6th April and the rain kept away just long enough for the 500 little yellow racers to fight their way down a slow-running stream navigating around stones, boulders and occasional hanging branches in a couple of heats and a tightly contested grand finale.

Duck 311 owned by Josh Jones took the hard-won £25 first prize, followed closely by Duck 94 owned by Steve Davies, winning the £15 second prize, just a ‘beak’ ahead of Duck 197 owned by Non Roberts who pocketed the £10 third prize.

Winner of the closely fought ‘Red Duck’ race was Duck 6 owned by Freya Jolles, just pushing out Duck 28 owned by Casi Chapman. Well done to Andy and Sian for once again organising the youngsters’ event.

Heat winners, each winning an Easter egg, were Duck 167 owned by Basil Gay; Duck 120 owned by Chris George; Duck 298 owned by ‘Roger from the Farmers’ and Duck 360 owned by Catherine Allen.

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone in the village and elsewhere who supported the Village Hall coffers by having a flutter.

Thanks also to Lisa Roberts and family for their sterling work in ‘sweeping’ the stream after every heat; to Frank for his flawless starts; to Glesni and helpers for the warm drinks and bacon rolls, and especially to Nick for organising the entire event.
